SEOUL, 16 April 2017 ? The Embassy of the Philippines in Seoul formally launched its Teaching English Skills Enhancement and Training Program for Filipino teachers in South Korea at the Rizal Hall of the Embassy Chancery on 16 April 2017.

The Program, which aims to upgrade and professionalize Filipino teachers who teach English in institutes/academies in Korea, is being undertaken by the Embassy in partnership with the Association of Filipino Educators in Korea (AFEK).

In his opening remarks, Philippine Ambassador to South Korea Raul S. Hernandez informed the participants that this initiative was born out of the Embassy's desire to upskill Filipino teachers in specific sectors of English language education so they can be more effective in their craft.

Ambassador Hernandez also stressed that the Program is designed specifically to help Filipino language teachers who have existing subject knowledge but have not taught professionally. It will focus on teaching the participants techniques as well as other teaching concepts that will further develop their subject knowledge.

The Program will run for a total of eight (8) sessions and is divided into two (2) modules ? basic English grammar and lesson planning.

The first module on Grammar will introduce basic English grammar concepts to the participants to enable them to have a better grasp of the different sound structures and sentence patterns of introductory English. Prof. Assumpta Calano of Sungkonghoe University will conduct the lessons.

The second module, which will be taught by Prof. Massuline Antonio Ligaya of Hansoe University, will provide an overview of lesson planning in general and lesson planning for language classes in particular.

A total of 19 participants, most of whom are currently teaching at hagwons (private academic institutes) and community centers, or as private English tutors, have signed up for the pilot program.
