PHILIPPINE AMBASSADOR AND DEFENSE ACQUISITION MINISTER HIGHLIGHT CONTINUED DEFENSE COOPERATION


Philippine Ambassador to the Republic of Korea Ma. Theresa Dizon-De Vega paid a farewell call on Minister Seok Jong Gun of the Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) in Gwacheon-si, Gyeonggi-do on 14 July 2025. The Minister assured continued cooperation with the Philippines through DAPA Director for Asia and Latin America Cooperation Division Hyunwook Kim who likewise joined the meeting. Ambassador Dizon-De Vega was joined by Third Secretary and Vice Consul Reisha Olavario and Defense Attaché Col. Don Templonuevo.

Gwacheon, Gyeonggi-do – Philippine Ambassador to the Republic of Korea Theresa Dizon-De Vega paid a farewell call on Minister Seok Jong Gun of the Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) in Gwacheon-si, Gyeonggi-do on 14 July 2025. Mutual recognition of the enduring and dynamic defense cooperation that has been cultivated over the last four years was highlighted during the call, where both sides reflected on the growing strategic partnership between the two nations, especially in defense. 

Ambassador Dizon-De Vega expressed sincere gratitude for the invaluable opportunity to work closely with DAPA counterparts. The close engagement has allowed both countries to collaborate extensively, strengthening mutual trust and deepening institutional linkages that are vital in reinforcing the defense and security landscape of the Philippines and the greater Indo-Pacific region. 

The Ambassador likewise noted the growing potential for multifaceted cooperation between the Philippines and the Republic of Korea, as the Philippines advances its goals of a self-reliant defense posture. The ROK already plays a significant role in strengthening the Philippine defense capabilities. This includes the continued use and potential expansion of cooperation utilizing ROK defense systems, including the procurement of FA-50 fighter jets and frigates, among other defense assets from the ROK.  

Noting the significant contributions of the PH-ROK strategic partnership on maritime security, both sides expressed confidence in the continued momentum of PH-ROK defense ties, especially in naval defense, and looked forward to further opportunities for joint research and development, training, and regional defense initiatives, aligned with the spirit of the PH-ROK Strategic Partnership. Increased cooperation in operational effectiveness, as well as expanding collaboration on Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) and local production, were also discussed. 

These initiatives are in alignment with the importance ROK President Lee Jae Myung accords K-defense and its contributions to peace and stability not just on the Korean Peninsula, but across the globe.
