WOOJUNG AWARDS SCHOLARSHIPS TO 15 FILIPINO GRAD STUDENTS IN ROK

Seoul, 20 February 2014 – Fifteen Filipino graduate students at advance degree programs in Korea were awarded scholarships for the Spring 2014 semester by the Woojung Education and Cultural Foundation (WECF) on 20 February 2014 at the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

"I believe that in the future you will become the leaders of your home countries in your own fields of specialization and make your nations be ranked as one of the developed countries.” Han Seung-Soo, former ROK Prime Minister and President of the General Assembly of the United Nations, told the students in his address. “Your dedication and patriotism are important keys because your countries are already rich in natural resources.”

WECF Chairman Dr. Joong- Keun Lee emphasized in his welcome address the Foundation’s advocacy in expanding educational opportunities across the different regions to frame the global leaders of the 21st century.

Iric Arribas, Chargé d’ Affaires of the Philippine Embassy in Korea, along with the ambassadors from other countries who are based in Seoul and the WECF Board of Directors attended the awarding ceremony.

The Woojung Foundation Scholarship, which is worth 4M won (US$3,700) for the spring semester, is very competitive. Evaluated every semester, the recipients (10 of whom are currently in sciences or engineering programs) have to fulfill a number of requirements to be able to justify their retention. Fourteen are continuing recipients; Monica Dulos (MA in International Relations at Sogang University) was the lone new grantee.

Of the 15 students, eight are in PhD programs: Valerie Diane Valeriano and Edward Alain Pajarillo (Animal Resource Science, Dankook Univesity), Joseph Dela Cruz (Agriculture, Hankyong National University), Choco Michael Gorospe (Molecular Biomedicine, Inha University), Judee Grace Nemeno (Biomedical Science and Technology, Konkuk University), Jocelyn B. Barbosa (Computer Science and Engineering, Korea University), John Marc Puguan (Energy Science, Myoungji University), and Eva Marie Wang (Global Education and Cooperation, Seoul National University).

Apart from Ms Dulos, the remaining recipients are enrolled in Masters programs: Ronel Laranjo (Practical Applied Linguistics) and Kristine Joy Mallari (Environmental Technology and Policy) at Korea University, Nikita Mercado (Public Policy, Korean Development Institute), Imee Necessito (Water Resources Engineering) and Alyssa Marie Fulgarenas (Chemical Engineering) at Kongju National University, and Albert Surla (Structural Engineering, Sangmyung University).

Although the WECF was established in 2008, Filipino students have been awarded scholarships only from February 2013. The other recipient countries are Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Timor Leste, Fiji, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Kenya, and Ghana.

PHILIPPINES SPOTLIGHTS PRISTINE NATURAL WONDERS AT SEOUL INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL FAIR

DOT in partnership with Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific Air, Radisson Hotel Group, Jpark Island Resort & Waterpark, Marriott International Philippines, Nustar Resort & Casino, and Pinatubo Mountainero Travel and Tours mounted the Philippine booth at the 41st SITF showcasing the Philippines dynamic culture, pristine nature, and premium resort destinations to domestic travelers and industry professionals. In addition, the Puerto Princesa City Government conducted a product presentation promoting Palawan to Korean travelers. Philippine Ambassador to the Republic of Korea, H.E. Bernadette Therese C. Fernandez attended the opening ceremony of the 41st SITF on 04 June 2026. Ambassador Fernandez visited the Philippine booth and expressed the Embassy’s full support to the Philippine delegation emphasizing that “The event serves as a meaningful opportunity to directly showcase the diverse and rich charms of the Philippines to Korean travelers, with whom the Philippines has maintained a close and long-standing partnership.” The Philippine pavilion drew crowd attention as participating companies hosted special presentations with highly coveted prizes including complimentary luxury hotel accommodation vouchers and round-trip airline tickets given to lucky winners. Since 1986, the SITF has grown into Korea’s leading international travel fair, becoming an important avenue for exchange and cooperation within the global tourism industry. Along with Korea’s regional destinations, there are over 300 organizations and businesses from 40 countries participating at this year’s edition of the SITF. For the Philippines, the ROK remains as one of the most vital and valued tourism markets and its participation in major travel and tourism exhibitions such as the SITF will further intensify initiatives to attract Korean travelers to visit the Philippines. MWO-OWWA HOLDS ON-THE-SPOT SLOGAN AND POSTER MAKING CONTESTS FOR 31ST MIGRANT WORKERS DAY

Seoul, 7 June 2026 - As part of the pre-celebration activities for the 31st Migrant Workers Day, the Philippine Embassy in Seoul, through the Migrant Workers Office (MWO) and Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA), successfully conducted the On-the-Spot Slogan Making Contest and On-the-Spot Poster Making Contest on 7 June 2026 at Sentro Rizal, Philippine Embassy in Seoul. Six participants competed in the slogan-making contest, while ten participants showcased their artistic talents in the poster-making contest. The contestants consisted of EPS Workers, Caregivers, and Professors all coming from different parts of Korea like Seoul, Gimpo, Hwaseong, Ansan, and Paju. The program also featured the special Migrant Workers Day messages of Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) Secretary Hans Leo J. Cacdac and OWWA Administrator Patricia Yvonne “PY” Caunan, who recognized the invaluable contributions of OFWs and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to their welfare and protection.
