Seoul, 12 May 2026 — The Philippine Embassy in Seoul participated in the commemorative opening ceremony of the “Garden of Gratitude” at Gwanghwamun Square in Seoul, Republic of Korea, a project honoring the sacrifices and contributions of 22 nations during the Korean War, including the Philippines.
The event was attended by Seoul Metropolitan Mayor Oh Se-hoon and other government officials, diplomats, war veterans, and members of the public, with H.E. Bernadette Therese C. Fernandez, Ambassador of the Republic of the Philippines to the Republic of Korea, representing the Philippine Embassy during the ceremony.
The Philippines was among the participating nations commemorated in the Garden of Gratitude, in recognition of the country’s historic contribution through the Philippine Expeditionary Forces to Korea (PEFTOK). As one of the first Asian countries to respond to the United Nations’ call for assistance in 1950, the Philippines deployed more than 7,400 Filipino soldiers who served with distinction in key battles during the Korean War.
The memorial stands as a lasting tribute to the bravery and sacrifice of Filipino veterans and underscores the enduring friendship between the Philippines and the Republic of Korea.
Ambassador Fernandez extended her felicitations on the inauguration of the Garden of Gratitude and underscored the importance of preserving the shared history between the Philippines and the Republic of Korea.
The Garden of Gratitude features symbolic sculptures and the “Light of Gratitude 23,” honoring the bravery of Filipino and Allied soldiers. The Embassy also attended the unveiling of the interactive Freedom Hall, which showcases digital exhibits on the Philippines’ role in the Korean War.
The Philippine Embassy in Seoul remains committed to honoring the legacy of Filipino veterans and strengthening Philippines–Korea relations through mutual respect, remembrance, and cooperation. END
