PHILIPPINES CHAMPIONS REGIONAL SOLIDARITY AND MULTILATERALISM FOR GREEN GROWTH

Philippine Ambassador Bernadette Therese C. Fernandez poses for a photo with GGGI Executive Director Mr. Sang Hyup Kim during the commemorative ceremony that was held at the Global Green Growth Institute Headquarters on 10 March 2026.

10 March 2026, Seoul - The Philippine Embassy in Seoul and the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) held a ceremony at GGGI’s headquarters in Seoul to commemorate the Philippines' inaugural voluntary core contribution. This landmark event marks the first instance of a Global South nation providing core funding to GGGI, signaling a significant evolution in South-South climate cooperation and international solidarity.

As a founding member, the Philippines has long driven impactful green growth initiatives, including climate-resilient agriculture and sustainable energy projects. This contribution likewise marks a new milestone in that partnership, celebrating the Philippines’ transition from a proactive member to a pioneering donor—the first from the Global South to support GGGI’s core operations.

Ambassador Fernandez remarked that "The Philippines is proud to support GGGI through this voluntary core contribution. As a climate-vulnerable nation, we recognize the importance of strong multilateral institutions that help countries pursue resilient and sustainable development pathways. This contribution reflects our commitment to solidarity, cooperation, and green growth across the Global South."

GGGI Executive Director of GGGI lauded the significance of the move "The Philippines’ decision to contribute core funding is a game-changer," said Mr. Kim. "It signals a new paradigm in climate action—one where Global South countries take an empowered, leading role in shaping international green growth agendas. This investment goes beyond financial support; it is a powerful statement of solidarity that will allow GGGI to respond more effectively to the urgent, diverse needs of our member states."

Unlike project-specific funding, this core contribution allows GGGI to maintain high-impact, flexible operations across its global network, further empowering the organization to scale up technical assistance and policy advice where it is needed most.

The Philippines looks forward to working closely with GGGI to advance sustainable development and accelerate climate action in the region. END
