Philippine Embassy in Seoul Organizes Hiking for Personnelbioclavid wiki bioclavid modic bioclavid til hunde

in line with the Philippine Embassy’s continuing effort to promote teamwork, staff development and environmental awareness, the Embassy organized a hiking trip to Mt. Soyo with the ASEAN Mountaineering Club (AMC) on 12 April 2008. Mt. Soyo is situated in Gyeonggi-do, about one hour from Seoul. Hiking is a very popular activity in South Korea. With the arrival of spring, thousands trek to nearby mountains every weekend both as a healthy physical activity and an affordable pastime. A total of 25 people from the Embassy joined the AMC, which is composed of hiking enthusiasts from Hankook Research, a private research firm, and members of the ASEAN Committee in Seoul. Participants from the Embassy included family members as well as staff from attached agencies.

Ambassador Cruz espouses “Savings” in Launching Financial Planning Program for OFWs

"Savings before expenses," neatly summarizes the essence of Philippine Ambassador Luis T. Cruz’s financial literacy campaign, launched on March 30 aimed at promoting savings consciousness for 50,000 Filipino workers in Korea. "Our effort is to build the financial capacity of Filipinos in Korea to be used for their livelihood projects upon their return to the Philippines. It will also be used as a hedge against the volatile exchange rate of the strengthening peso against other currencies," said Amb. Cruz. The Philippine peso has gained 28% against the Korean currency since 2006.

Philippine Economy Impressive in 2007

Amid growing fears of global slowdown, the Philippines managed its best economic performance in over three decades. The economy surged by 7.4% in the last quarter, bringing about a 31-year record high of 7.3% real GDP growth rate. The expansion was driven by strong consumer spending, public construction, and exports of services even as merchandise exports weakened. Under the Arroyo administration, the economy grew with the highest GDP average of 4.4% in the period 2001-2006, vs. Estrada's 2.8% in 1998-2000, Ramos' 3.7% in 1992-1998, and Aquino's 3.7% in 1986-1992.

Cruz (left) awards an Outstanding Achievement Medal to Major General Sun-Chul Lee (center) of the ROK Army for his efforts to promote logistics cooperation between the Philippines and South Korea. As Director-General of the Logistics Management Bureau, Major General Lee was instrumental in initiating joint programs between the Philippine Department of National Defense and the South Korean Ministry of National Defense, including the grant of two patrol boats and 134 mobility and engineering equipment last year.
